He died at his plantation home. He served in the military.

(6) He served in the Alabama Home Guards during the War Between the
States, being First Lieutenant in Co. A, whose Captain was William C. Wallis,
under General Tyler's Cavalry.
A letter from the State of Alabama Archives notes that:
"Records show J. A. Jones, 1st Lieutenant, age 29, enlisted 18 August 18964,
residence Chamber County, Alabama in W. C. Wallis' Company, mounted Infantry,
2nd Class Alabama State Militia."
A letter from the Adjutant General's Office of the War Department in Washington
states that:
"The records show that J. Allen Jones, name also found as John A. Jones,
served as 1st Lieutenant commanding a Detachment of Captain Wallis' Company,
Mounted Alabama Militia, serving as scouts on Chaltahoocha River. His name appears
on a receipt for forage for thirty public horses in the service of Captain Wallis'
Company which was paid at West Point, Georgia on August 26, 1864 and September
5, 1864. No later record of him has been found."
He was buried in Rosemere Cemetery, Opelika, Alabama.

the States. He settled in Oak Bowery (Chambers County) Alabama.
