He was Postmaster at Oak Bowery in 1858. Records show that he had a store in
Chambers County, at Oak Bowery, in 1857. He was also Worshipful Master of the
Oak Bowery Masonic Lodge No. 108 in 1860.
In 1861, he was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company A. 14th Alabama Infantry.
In 1862, James J. Havis was promoted to the rank of Captain. In 1864, he was
Captain and Army Brigade Quartermaster of the 14th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

When the Civil War was ended, James J. Havis returned to Oak Bowery and his family.
In 1866, he and M. E. Echols built the mill at Riverview, Alabama. At the time,
known as the Alabama-Georgia Mill, we know it today as the Riverdale Mill of
the West Point-Pepperell. The cornerstone on the original part of the mill has
the names of James J. Havis and M. E. Echols on it. When a addition was built
to the mill, the cornestone was moved, but it can be seen from the back of the
mill to this day.
