Mary Sophia Brown (2) was born on 31 May 1849 in Oak Bowery, Chambers Co., Alabama.(1) (2) She died in 1930.(1) She was also known as Mollie or Molly.(2) After the death of her husband, Mollie stayed in Atlanta and raised her children. After the children had married and left home, she broke up housekeeping and went to live in Birmingham, Alabama with her sons, Edgar and Cecil. During the spring and summer months, she came back to Atlanta and stayed a while with each of her other two sons, Brown and Fred.
She was married to John Sam Logan on
16 Apr 1868 in Opelika, Lee Co., Alabama.(1)
(2) The Logans were staunch Methodists.
John Sam Logan(2) was born
on 18 May 1847 in Russell County, Alabama.(2)
He died on 30 Apr 1887 in Atlanta, Georgia.
(2) He left Mollie a widow at 37 with seven children ranging in age
from 1 to 18. He was buried in Opelika, Lee Co., Alabama.
(2) John Sam Logan's obituary in the Atlanta Constitution on Saturday
30 April 1887 read as follows:
"Mr. John Sam Logan, who had charge of the printing department of the railway
mail service in the United States courthouse, died this morning a little after
midnight. He had been suffering from dysentery for the past ten days. The remains
will be carried to Opelika, Alabama today for interment. Mr. Logan was a member
of Damon Lodge Number 14, Knights of Pythias of Opelika."
John Sam Logan and Oliver S. Burnett began the publication of The LaFayette
Clipper in 1873. Both gentlemen were practical printers who understood the printing
art, hence the Clipper was an unusually well printed paper and skillfully edited.
The Clipper was succeeded by the LaFayette Sun in October 1880 and it continues
today.
John Sam Logan was a railway mail route messenger between Opelika and Buffalo,
Alabama, and was later in charge of the printing office of the railway mail service
in Atlanta, Georgia. Mary Sophia Brown and John Sam Logan had the following
