Recent presenters have included:

  • Art Straub will speak on the history of the Minnesota River on Thursday, March 1, 2001.
  • Bill Taylor, grandson of Eli Taylor, shared his memories of his grandfather along with the history of the moccasin game and how it evolved into what is played today (February, 2001).
  • Artist John Shoptease provided a talk on traditional ways of creating authentic Indian Jewelry and also display some of his work (April, 2000).
  • Wayne Allen, PhD, spoke on tradional ancient cultures while providing a demonstration on flint knapping (January, 2000)
  • Paul Maravelas gave a presentation on the Village of Shakopee and the Battle of Shakopee (December, 1999).
  • Kevin Callahan spoke on the subject of Sacred Stones (November, 1999).
  • Chuck Bailey presented a video and spoke on the Rochester Creek Rock Art (petroglyphs in Utah). (October, 1999).
  • Reverend Gary Cavender gave a talk on "Governor Ramsey and the Trader's Role in the Treaties of Pilot Knob and Traverse des Sioux." (September, 1999).
  • Wayne Allen from Mankato State University gave a slide presentation and lecture on "New Archaeology." (May, 1999).
  • Rubem Lima provided a personal account of his participation in a sun dance ceremony on the Rosebud Reservation. (April, 1999).
  • Bruce Dowlin talked about the video "Bones of Contention." (March, 1999).
  • Don Crofut spoke on Dakota stories and myths. (February, 1999).
  • Scott Meyer and Rod Johnson, archaeologists, gave a talk demonstration on the ancient practice of flint (chert) knapping (January, 1999).
  • Reverend Gary Cavender, author and lecturer on North American spirituality, spoke on the sacred sites near the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers (Camp Coldwater area) (December, 1998).
  • Wayne Allen, archeologist talking on traditional peoples of Canada's Northwest Territories. (November, 1998).
  • Douglas Birke, archeologist talking on the early French presence in Minnesota. (October, 1998).
  • Don Crofut spoke on his knowledge of native herbs and medicines of the Dakota people. (September, 1998).

When

Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month, typically running from September through May. Call to order usually begins at 7:30, with the featured program running from 8:00 to 9:00. Members are free to linger for coffee and cookies after the program.

Where

Meetings are held at Dakotah Sport and Fitness (Meeting Rooms A and B). Address: 2330 NW Sioux Trail, Prior Lake--off 154th Street, south of Hwy 101 and Cty. Rd. 42.
