Introduction

Did you know that the ground around your home--the same ground where you run and play today--has supported the feet of children for thousands of years?

If you live in the Minnesota cities of Mankato or St. Paul or Red Wing, or anywhere in between, the children running through the woods and across the prairie for much of the past 400 years would identify themselves as Dakota.

In their language, the word Dakota meant "friend."
