On 05 February 1885 the buliding complex burned to the ground. Many businesses were destroyed. The New York Times on that date estimated the loss to Dalton & Co. ("fringe merchants") at $15,000.

However, the follow-up story the next day stated:

"J. Dalton, manufacturer of lace nets, &c., occupied the fourth floor of Nos. 108 and 110 Wooster-street. He claims that his machinery, which is all destroyed, cannot be replaced for less than $75,000, and his total loss will be not less than $100,000. Dalton has an insurance of $2,000."

On 06 February 1885 the New York Sun reported "J. Dalton lost $80,000 worth of imported machinery, in addition to $25,000 worth of stock and models of inventions that cannot be replaced. The insurance was $40,000."

Shortly after the fire the family moved to Connecticut.
