During her ice skating career, Helen was selected as Miss 1926 in the St. Paul, Minneapolis Winter Festival. His parents divorced when Bob and his sister Bernice were very young, so Bob went through grade school and high school as Robert Apgar. Helen Apgar Claus remarried in 1936 to Clifford Champine, a local attorney. Shortly after Bob's natural father died in a hunting accident in 1941, he decided to change his name to Robert Apgar Champine because of his high regard for his step father. He went on to make this name famous."
