"On 17 May, 1867, Treffley received a summons to appear before the Court, testifying on the behalf of his stepfather, the defendant, Louis Touchette. Louis had filed suit against Edward Longevin who, despite frequent warnings and arguments from neighbors, continually left his gate open leaving his cattle able to roam and eat the hay of neighboring farmers. Louis was seeking damages for his hay which had been kept inside a fenced area until the Longevin cattle broke down his fence and ate a good portion of the hay. Louis brought five witnesses to this event, one of which was his stepson, Treffley St. Aubin. Louis won the case and each of his witnesses, including Treffley, were paid $1.10 for their services.

On 12 Nov 1867, Louis was awarded a judgement of $20. for his loss of fence and hay, while Longevin was ordered to pay court costs of $26.95, plus Louis's attorney fees of $8.80. Included in the court costs was $1.65 for an interpreter."
