  General Notes:

  Notes on his death:

"An Aged Citizen Is Found Dead

Edward Chivalier Expires at the Advanced Age of Eighty-Nine Years

Edward Chivalier was found dead in bed at an early hour last Monday morning by his daughter, Mrs. Julia White, with whom he had been staying since the previous Thursday. he attained the advanced age of over 89 years.

He was one of the pioneers of McLeod county, and for the past eight years had resided on Hennepin avenue south of Buffalo creek bridge. Having been unwell of late, his daughter prevailed upon him to come to her home where she could care for him. He suffered a spell of weakness Sunday and she sat up with him until midnight, when he was apparently much better and insisted that she leave him and take her night's rest. His life evidently ebbed quietly away as a natural consequence of old age.

The late Edward Chivalier was born at Assumption, province of Quebec, Canada, on July 8, 1822. In 1841 he married at St. Alfonse, Canada, Matilda Goulet, a sister of Celestian Goulet, of Bergen. She passed away about fifteen years ago. He came with his family to McLeod county in 1858 and settled in Bergen township, and after a residence of two years he removed to Sumter township, where he remained until the Indian outbreak being forced to flee with his family to St. Paul. After residing in that city for two years he went to Sibley county, where he lived for ten years and then returned to this county and settled on a farm in Glencoe town where he remained until he removed to this city.

He was the father of thirteen children, seven of whom survive him. They are Louis, of Henderson; Joseph, of Hancock; Mrs. Mary Willson and William, of Helen town; Mrs. Josephine Goulet, of Glencoe town, and Mrs. A. Goulet and Mrs. Julia White of this city.

The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. George's church, Rev. Father John Byrne officiating, and the remains were interred in the East Side cemetery. A large cortege of friends and relatives paid their respects to the departed life at the grave.

The deceased was a man who was highly respected by all. He was one of the sturdy pioneers who blazed the way for the future settlement and improvement of the lands in this county, and he and his family endured the many hardships akin to pioneer life."
