Joseph Goulet Settler At St George In 1862 Dies In This City

Joseph Goulet passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Beihoffer, in this city Tuesday evening, Nov. 10, aged 82 years and 6 months. The deceased was born in St. Alfonse, province of Quebec, Canada, in 1844, and at the age of eleven years set out to seek fortune among strangers, securing employment in the northern woods in the Great Lakes' region. He moved to St. Paul in 1861, locating a short time later at what was known as Little Canada, a French settlement near St. Paul, and engaged in farm work. In 1862 he obtained work on Mississippi river steamboats and on steamboats plying the Minnesota river.

That year he married Julia Gauthier, of St. Paul, and they decided to make their home in McLeod county where land was fertile and settlers were locating. The filed and settled on a homestead at St. George. When the Indian uprising occurred he was among the first to lend assistance to settlers around Fort Ridgley who were menaced by the hostile Indians, where he suffered privations while repelling the attacks of the redskins.

After the Indian outbreak was quelled, he returned to his homestead at St. George and began the task of clearing it of its heavy timber which necessitated much hard work, at the same time enduring the hardships which fell to the lot of pioneers.

Mr. Goulet after selling the homestead, operated a farm in Sumter township for thirteen years. He then disposed of this farm and moved to a farm in the vicinity of Hancock, Minn., which he successfully operated until 1901. He then retired from successful agricultural pursuits, and he and his wife since that time have rested enjoying the fruits of their years of labor, and have spent the time among their children in St. Paul, Minneapolis and Glencoe.

Their matrimonial union was blessed by thirteen children, of whom the following survive: Joseph F., of Minneapolis; Louise, of Hancock; George, of Hancock; Oliver, of Clontaf (sic); Fred, of Hancock, Arthur, of Minneapolis; Mrs. Dave Beihoffer, of Glencoe; Mrs. Ernest La Beau, of St. Paul; Mrs. Earl Davis, of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Edward Awe, of Herman.

Requiem mass was solemnized at St. George's Catholic church at nine o'clock Friday morning, Rev. Father Maloney officiating. All members of the family were present, and also many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a large number of friends. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.

The passing of Joseph Goulet removes one of the sturdy earliest settlers of this county who bravely faced the privations and vicissitudes of those early days to blaze a way for and made possible the development that exists today.

The community sympathizes with the widow and children in their deep bereavement at the loss of a kind-hearted husband and father.
