Model Railroad Layout

Welcome to my model railroad web page. I will try to keep this site updated with my progress on designing and building my layout.

Updated November 19, 2002

Well, I've changed my plans for the layout design. I've recently obtained the land rights to the entire room, so I'll be reworking the layout. A VERY rough sketch of the plan can be seen in this drawing:

As you can see, I'm dropping the idea of a helix. I plan on using a more prototypical switch back instead, to get the trains between the lower level and the upper level.

Stay tuned for more updates!

My layout will be a freelanced HO standard gauge layout based on Colorado railroading around the year 1880 or 1890. Motive power and rolling stock will be appropriately small, thus allowing the minimum radius selected below.

Working Dimensions

Room Size: 21'6" x 13'8"
Layout Size: 21'6" x 8'
Lower Track Height: 40"
Upper Track Height: 56"
Minimum Radius: 20" (18" at stations and mines)

Layout Design

Here are some screen shots of my plan so far. As I was continuing to struggle with where to put track, and how much space the stations and stops should take, I realized that I needed additional boundaries defined for each station. Thus, the colored rectangles. Once the plan is finalized, I'll plan each station within the confines of the rectangle around it. Then it should be a simple matter of connecting the stations with track. We'll see. :-)

I've created this design using 3rd PlanIt, the all-around best layout design tool available. More information, including a demo, can be found at http://www.eldoradosoft.com/.
