There is no proof that this is Jacob's father. He was just the right
age, name, and lived in the area at the right time. However, I can offer
the following evidence linking Valentine Ingram Sr. to Jacob Ingram and
Jacob's son Valentine B. Ingram. It would be nice to be more accurate,
but until a marriage record or obituary is obtained for Jacob Ingram we
can't be more certain. Here is what I know.
1. 1840 Census has Hannah Rouse, wife of Valentine Ingram, with a male
age 15-20 listed amongst the family.
2. "Our" Jacob Ingram was born November 13, 1824, and therefore is the
right age to be the male listed on the 1840 census.
3. Guardian Bonds, Washington Co VA 1780-1782, page 37, identifies
Valentine's younger children in the following text including a Jacob.
"Sep. 22, 1845 - Sampson Cole named guardian of Jacob, Dorcas, Sarah and
Mary Ingram, orphans of Valentine Ingram, deceased. Bond: $500. Surety:
Leonidas Love."
Since only one male is listed in the bond, we might again assume the male
listed in the 1840 census was probably named Jacob.
4. At least two well researched braches of Valentine Sr. named their
children similarly. Catherine and Jacob both used "Valentine", "William",
and "Parker Smith" for example.
Unrelated Speculations:
March 28, 1818 list of pensioners who had given up their land bounty in
exchange for annual payments lists the following additional Valentine
Ingram.
"Lemuel Thompson - Guardian of the heirs of Valentine Ingram, Private,
$48 annual payment in Virginia"
In the 1830 Census, a Hannah Ingram is heading the house. Presumably her
husband, Valentine, passed away before reaching the first census that
would have shown him as head of the house. In later years, an elder
Hannah is listed on the census with one of her children.
