HENRY AND CHRISTINE (SKAUG) HINTZ
Henry Charles Hintz and Christine Skaug were married in Albert Lea,
MN. They moved to Oelwein in 1901 and purchased the furniture store and
undertaking business from John Millard. They eventually had six
children: Carlyle, Harold, Donald, Robert, Marian and Marjorie.
Marjorie passed away at nine years of age of diphtheria. In 1902 Henry
was joined in business with his brother, Albert.
Two sons of Henry, Carlyle and Harold, stayed in Oelwein to be in
business with their father.
In 1917 they built their new building at 101 South Frederick where
Winter Photography is presently located.
Carlyle joined the business as funeral director in 1919, and Harold
in the furniture store in 1924. These two brothers bought Albert's
interest in 1924.
In 1922 Carlyle married Lola Nicholson. Three children were born to
this union: Richard, George and Nancy. Harold married Violet Irvine and
they had four children: Shirley, Bill, Mary Ann and John.
In 1927 the funeral home was moved to the present location of
Hintz-Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Inc. on 1st Ave. NE.
In 1946, Carlyle's son Richard, after graduating from the College of
Mortuary Science of St. Louis, MO, joined his father in the funeral
home. He was the first third-generation funeral director to graduate
from this school. He married Llea Ingamells in 1949 and they had two
sons: Charles and David. Richard bought the funeral home from his
father in 1963.
George joined the furniture store in 1947 as a floor mechanic. He
married Joy Orth in 1956 and they had four children: Jon, Christine,
Nancy, and Donald.
Harold passed away in 1968 and his son-in-law, Jack Theobald, managed
the furniture store until it was sold. Carlyle passed away in 1976.
In 1987 Richard sold the funeral home to Charles Geilenfeld. George
passed away in 1991 and Richard in 1993.
