This is a pictorial encylopedia of N-scale locomotives (restricted to American prototypes, or foreign prototypes factory-painted in American prototype schemes). Listed are all of the N-scale locomotives that I have owned at one time or another, or locomotives that I've verified to probably exist. Narrow gauge locomotives are not included, nor are locomotive shells.
Research (especially on the older locomotives) has been extensive. This has involved tracking down the very few N scale collector's guides that have been published over the years, purchasing and skimming every single issue of Model Railroader from the early 60's on, obsessively monitoring eBay auctions, scouring the internet in general, and (possibly most importantly) corresponding with many of the people actually involved in the creation of these models. Like all human endeavors, there are bound to be some mistakes in these listings, but hopefully I've kept them to a minimum.

* This encyclopedia defines a locomotive as being "DCC Ready" if it is available with a factory-installed decoder, if it has an NMRA DCC plug, or if it accepts a drop-in decoder replacement for its PC board. At this stage of the game, I'm no longer impressed by such half-measures as merely isolating the motor from the frame and leaving some room for a decoder, or even out-and-out providing wiring for a decoder. I'll leave such nebulous designations as "DCC Friendly", "DCC Compatible" or "DCC Capable" to the hair-splitters. As far as I'm concerned, if I have to fire up my soldering iron in order to install a decoder in a locomotive, it ain't DCC ready.
