Comics From the Golden Age

Starting with that box of old "Dell" Disney comics at Grandma's house when I was a kid in the 1960's, I've been a reader and collector of comic books for pretty much my entire life. My collections have come and gone over the years, covering pretty much the entire gamut of genres and titles, but my current obsession is limited to titles from the so-called "Golden Age" of comics. Now, like all arbitrary "ages", when exactly the Golden Age actually started and ended is pretty much up for debate. But, for my purposes I'm going with the conventional wisdom and saying it started in 1938 with the publication of Action Comics #1 and ended in 1955 with the institution of the "Comics Code".

At this stage of my life I'm not particularly interested in reading these comics, rather I'm more interested in appreciating the lurid artistic appeal of the covers and the overall nostalgic aura of the books (and, as I tell my wife, maintaining them as a non-401K investment). My goal is to collect at least one issue of every title published during the Golden Age. This is, of course, completely insane (me not possessing Bill Gates-esque money), but such is the nature of collecting. I will be presenting these comics here, as I acquire them, as a reference to others who might be similarly interested in a wide variety of wonderful old comics.

Note- A number of "key" issues from the early Golden Age appear below. Don't get excited, I don't own any of them. And given the fact that they all sell for thousands of dollars even in the lowest grades, I'm not likely to ever own any of them. But, since I want this page to eventually represent a complete list of Golden Age titles, I figure I might as well go ahead and add them now (along with the, ahem, "borrowed" pictures).
