These models date back to the early days of N scale (late 60s / early 70s). They have metal wheels and truck-mounted Rapido couplers. They are stamped "Bachmann - Made in China" on the bottom. At least as of this writing (2008), Bachmann is still cranking these things out.
I'm told that this model was based on a Morrison International Car Company Rock Island prototype (said prototype being shorter than most such cars).
