Gargoyles is one of the few animated series produced in the US that can compete with the better Japanese animes. While all but dead now, Gargoyles was an amazingly well thought-out fantasy/sci-fi epic that focused on a group of creatures known as gargoyles. These creatures, resembling bat-winged humanoids, originally lived in tenth century Scotland, where they guarded their castle home by night, and were frozen by the sun into stone statues by day. A dreadful betrayal resulted in the deaths of most of their clan, and the few survivors were frozen permanently into stone, until the day that their castle was lifted above the clouds.

In contemporary New York, a billionaire industrialist, David Xanatos, discovered the legend, and decided to do just that. Moving the castle to a new roost atop the tallest skyscraper in New York, he broke the spell, allowing the gargoyles to live again. Goliath, the leader of the gargoyles, and his remaining clan soon discovered that Xanatos was not the friend they thought he was. Fortunately, they did discover a much truer friend, in the form of Elisa Maza, a New York detective, who helped to expose Xanatos as the villain he was, and to help acclimatize the gargoyles to the contemporary world.

This series provides one of the finest blends of fantasy and science-fiction elements that I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing in a television series. Character development is strong and consistent, and both the heroes and villains rarely fall into the stereotypes common in other animated series (Xanatos, in particular, is one of the least stereotypical villains I've ever seen).

It was a sad thing that the show had to end. Fortunately, however, the fans of the show were less willing to see it die, and many of us, myself included, worked together to allow the show to live on in fanfiction form. The result: The Gargoyles Saga. TGS is a well-organized project populated by more than forty writers, editors, and artists, working together to try to continue the series in roughly the way its original creator had intended. In addition to the continuation of the Gargoyles series, TGS is also composed of three spin-off series, Timedancer, Dark Ages, and Pendragon, and is well into its second season of episodes for most of these. I, myself, have written or co-written several episodes, and have edited many others. If you're a fan of the show, or just want to read some good fic, stop on by!
