I'm getting settled in to life in Delft.
- I have a library card. At a cafe I can order beer, and ask for the
check. I can tell the cab driver that
the weather is nice tonight, and although I might not
be able to make out what he says in response.
-
Nina and I went to an Escher exhibit at
The
Kunsthal in Rotterdam and I hope to go back soon to see the Dorothea
Lange photography exhibit.
-
Many people have invited the two of us to dinner, and we have
had a very good time.
-
Force
Elektro is the local Ultimate team and they
have been gracious in letting me practice and play with them.
Most importantly, I know to use the word lekker. Lekker
translates to any of a number of things: good, tasty, nice, Damn Skippy,
cool. Take your pick.
You can use it to describe the weather, beer, food, or your latest trip
to Amsterdam. Hence the mashed potato and greens that make up
stampot are lekker, especially when the weather is not.
And everyone wants their product to be lekker, or to use the superlative,
the lekkerste. Hence you have the lekkertse cake, the lekkerste bakery,
and the lekkerste vacations.
Last night, Nina and I were in Amsterdam with Vlad Vas'ko to pass the
time during his flight layover. There just happened to be a small carnival
in the Dam square, so we rode on the Ferris wheel. Unlike the one in
Navy pier, Chicago, this Ferris wheel had no plastic on the gondolas and
allowed unhindered access to the city vista and the cool breeze over
the rooftops.
We had an excellent view of the Central Station, the National Monument,
and the National Gallery, all illuminated against the purple cloak of
night.
That ride came after dinner and before beer at small cafe. It was
lekker.
And in case you were wondering, I'd guess I'd have to say that
the hookers are better looking at 10 pm on a Thursday night
than they are at noon on a Tuesday.
