Exactly What Doubled
CBS just doubled the amount of money they pay the NCAA to broadcast the
annual men's College Basketball tournament. I have to wonder if the NCAA
was forced to negotiate for that rise in revenue because of higher costs
of one form or another. I'm wondering, what could have doubled?
- Did the prices of basketballs suddenly double?
- What about the costs of the uniforms and shoes that the players where?
From what I can see in shopping malls, these are outrageously expensive. But
come to think of it, the schools probably get those for free in return for
promotional considerations - so that the malls can charge outrageous prices for them.
- Maybe the NCAA will halve ticket prices now. To give the fans a
break.
- Are they giving the players more? This easily doubles player salaries.
Triples, even. In fact, any multiple you want, because the players get paid
nothing in return for generating an $8 billion contract. They do get those NCAA scholarships, of course. That does mean something for the ones that graduate.
- Did the graduation rates double? Probably not.
I think the only thing that doubled was the hypocrisy.
