| Home -> Monday Night Football -> So Glad ABC Has It |
Gearing Up For Another SeasonNormally, I would be upset that the Networks spent so much to get the new NFL contract, but I am thankful that ABC put up the money to keep Monday Night Football. As much as Dan Dierdorf may be annoying, he does not annoy me anywhere near as much as Paul Maguire does.Paul Maguire sounds like a poor man's Wilfred Brimley who had the misfortune to drink about 5 double cappuccinos before going on the air. He has all the mouthy timbre of a breakfast cereal spokesman combined with the manic speed and incoherence of an amphetamine addict. Hey, Paul, here's a little advice: Lay off the crank before your next broadcast. Almost as bad as Maguire is Phil Simms. When I think of Phil Simms as a quarterback, I piocture him handing off the ball. Those Giants teams were primarily run offenses, right? Smash mouth football, big offensive line, move the sticks down the field. Simms was not exactly Mr. Excitement out on the gridiron. Mr. Competent comes to mind. Mistake free. He makes for about as thrilling and interesting color commentary. This only encourages Maguire to talk more. Had NBC won the rights to Monday Night Football, I might have watched the games in the coming season, but I wouldn't have heard any of them. Just mute the TV, and turn on the tunes, because the Paul Maguire and Phil Simms show would be here. I may be speaking too son, however. Boomer Esiason might just get replaced by whatever is in my CD player at the time.
