Damn Those Colts

October 6 - But Who Did They Beat?

New England at Denver (-4½)
Two teams undefeated, scoring about 35 points per game. But they haven't played any one. The combined records of their opponents, 14-20.

So I'm taking the home field advantage and taking Denver. Let's see if I can put another streak together.

Well, Denver Has Now Beaten New England
The G-Man strokes the sweet stuff for another win. Only two more and I am back in the black.

Maybe I should keep my mouth shut for a while, though.

October 13 - Triskadekaphobia

Dallas (-2½) at Washington
I am not superstitious, so picking a game on the thirteenth doesn't bother me. It does bother me to pick one of these teams, though. Bloody 13 If the Iggles can run for 200 yards against Washington (as they did in Philly, October 5th) then Dallas should be able to get Emmitt Smith into the endzone for the first time since last year.

Yet I believe Norv Turner will have Washington ready, and Barry Switzer remains an idiot. To hell with it, I'm going with the home team underdog.

That over under line remains scary though.

Lucky 13
The Redskins won without Terry Allen, and without Michael Westbrook. Dallas lost with Switzer. He remains an idiot, and I remain in the red, but my performance is just make-believe stuff.

October 20 - Pretty Color

Buffalo at Indianapolis (-1)
Nina likes to watch Monday Night Football games. I introduced her to the game with the bribes of beer and nachos, but she has gradually grown to like the game itself. She has gone from being a fan of "big piles" to a fan of specific players like Young and Rice.

She does have her own ideas about the game that I may not have noticed without her. For instance, she thinks the blue of the Colts' uniforms is especially pleasing to the eye. That should make her all the happier that I'll be rooting for them tonight.

I like the Overs bet, as well. These teams, good defenses or not, put up 72 points combined on September 21, and can surely get 40 between the two.

I actually had the Colts in mind since they lost last Sunday night at Pittsburgh in a close one that went to the end. I should have gotten off my lazy ass and written it down too, because the line opened with Buffalo favored by 1, or a pick game in other spots. Seems other people believe that the Colts are better than their 0-6 record, and so the line moved to make them the 1 point favorite. That's life.

That's Life Buffalo 9, Indianapolis 6.
Yeah yeah yeah. Maybe my brother can heckle me a little bit, and I'll have something creative to say here.

I didn't even feel like updating it until the Iggles beat the Cowboys yesterday. Then I was happy. But not enough to put up that big -110 on the index.

Less than an hour left to pick this week's game, I better get to it.

October 27 - Losing Twice As Fast

Green Bay at New England(-2)
New England could not seem to get prepared for the Jets in what one would think would be a big game for them. Why should anyone expect them to be ready for the Packers?

Well, maybe because I'm picking Green Bay. That should give anyone in New England that ever comes by here a sigh of relief.

Chicago at Miami(-8½)
Why not? At 130 in the hole, why not try another. It isn't real money anyay.

Yes, the Marlins took it to game seven and delayed the Dolphins game, so I get to pick two games tonight.

The Bears finally look healthy, I'm going with the NFC Central underdog for this one, too. I'll go with the overs as well, because like I said before, it ain't real money.

-27 October 1997

Or Win Twice as Fast
Well, the Packers did their part, and the Bears came back and helped me out as well. When I saw that Miami went up 26-18, I was content to take the overs and hope for a push on the spread. When Miami went up 33-18, I thought I was done. But SportsCenter never showed the highlights, and sure enough, Da Bears came back. I deserve a break. Besides, it ain't real money.
