Home -> Trip to Kobe, Japan

7 Days in Japan

In mid July of this past summer, Nina and I visited some friends in Japan for a week-long holiday. The trip was fantastic. Everything was an experience, from learning to use the efficient (and easy) train system, to picking up some groceries in a small market.

We took a lot of pictures on the trip, and I thought I'd show a few here.

The best part of the trip was that we had friends in the Kinki region. Now, I know what that sounds like, but let me explain. Kinki is the name of the area around Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe. Pictured here, clockwise from upper left are Brenda, myself, Nina, Eric, and Kyoko. Eric and Brenda are now in LA seeking fame and fortune.

This is Himedji-jo, or Himedji castle, also known as The White Crane. Stunning in both beauty and size. One would be crazy to have attacked this fortress, and allied forces did not even try bombing it during World War II. Of course, that might also have been because the large white structure made a convenient landmark for pilots...

My Man in Kobe (actually Osaka in this picture) In the center of this picture from Osaka at night is J Tomes. I've known J for a long time, and it was great to stay with him for a few days in Kobe. J teaches English in a middle school in the Kobe school district along with Heywood Wu, a Canadian, on the far left.

The Peace Shrine in Kyoto. The orange and greens of the building are very bold. Even grey overcast skies, which make Nina and I look dark, could not stop the colors from showing on film.

Oh, yeah, grubbin' tough in Japan. These are cold somen noodles. Yum. The problem is there are too many bowls on the table. I took a big swallow of soy sauce, taking it for my tea by mistake.

These are gods. That's an offering in front. Enough said.   Kiss My Ass, Scully! A great picture of Brenda, who was an awesome hostess while we were there.

Lastly, Kinkakuji, or Golden Temple. That is real gold leaf on the outside. By virtue of that, this was about as close as we got to that temple.
