Just Say No Comment

The next time you go in for a job interview, or fill out some application or other, and find yourself asked if you have ever taken illegal drugs, I suggest you do what Geroge W. Bush would do. Just say "No Comment". After all, if you can run for the job of President without answering the question, why should IBM care?

Oh, sure, he's already caught on to that wry cynicism. Bush's standard answer to that question now is (I'm paraphrasing here) that the current questionairre for potential Federal Employees asks if the applicant has taken illegal drugs in the past seven years. Geroge W assures us he can answer that question as 'no'.

Personally, I don't care if George W used to make sand castles out of cocaine or rolled around in giant sleeping-bag shaped joints. But when he starts in with the tough on crime rhetoric, and campaigns to head an executive branch of government spending $17 billion on the "war on drugs", I find his attitude at the least inconsistent.

If Mr. Bush sincerely believes, as he told the Dallas Morning News, that "some people may have made mistakes when they were younger, and the question the president must ask is did they learn from those mistakes and will they not repeat them again", can we then assume that the candidate would support a rollback of mandatory sentencing for first time offenders?

Somehow, I expect the answer will be "no", at least for the next four years.
