Mo' Better Mobutu!

Though under fire as an unwelcome guest in a post-cold war Zaire, President Mobutu Sese Seko
Fresh Lid 1 does not compromise. He is as much at ease in the horn rimmed glasses and chic animal cap today as he was 30 years ago. You go, boy!

Furthermore, as these photos show, President Mobutu has never hesitated to symbolically wear the resources of Zaire that he helped plunder. Such unwavering consistency in the face of one's people is the true mark of a dictator destined for history.

We are proud to feature Mobutu in our Dictator Fashion Spotlight; at least before he is deposed sometime this spring.

For now, a tip of the cheetah print hat to the man who named himself "The all-powerful warrior who, because of his endurance and inflexible will to win, will go from conquest to conquest leaving fire in his wake." Well, it sure looks as if he went from closet-to-closet leaving fire in his wake. Look out world, here comes The Inflexible Will of Mobutu Sese Seko!

Read more about Mobutu here (lengthy article) at the periodic International Relations Journal of San Francisco State University.

Lastly, I could not resist this gem from the May 4 peace talks aboard a South African naval vessel. I left in Mr. Nelson Mandela because he is sporting the mad flavor. I wish him well, and I hope that democracy persists in South Africa, and I never have to show Mr. Mandela as a feature performer here. I do feature President Mobutu, though. Someone at these peace talks should discuss the concept of pattern matching with the man.
