Who's Threatening Whom?

The last thing I want to hear right now from the Clinton administration or Congress is that Saddam Hussein is threatening the peace. In the summer of 1997, when he threatened to shoot down U2 spy planes flying over Iraqi airspace, I would believe that statement. But all Saddam Husseiin has done is defy a United Nations Resolution.

The United States does that all the time. This nation has owed millions of dollars in back dues to the orginization, bullied Boutros Boutros Ghali out of office, and stubbornly refused to remove land mines from the Korean peninsula.

As fas as I know, the only parties threatening military action in the Persian Gulf are the U.S. and Britain. We are the ones threatening the peace.

What if tomorrow, Turkey demanded that we give up our stockpile of chemical weapons, and force Clinton out of office? I think even Kenneth Starr would join in the chorus of "What exactly are you smoking in that hookah?" and "Ataturk was a fag!"

The fact is we do have weapons of mass destruction, and the government has admittedly exposed citizens to harmful radiation. You may need to go back 30 years, but our track record isn't much better than Iraq's on this one.

Besides, what do we hope to gain from an air strike? We can't safely knock out any stockpile, or destroy munitions production facilities. I doubt we could remove Hussein from power.

Seems to me if we really want to assassinate the Iraqi leader, we should buy him an all expense paid trip to the Italian Alps, and let a few low flying planes knock out some more gondalas.

I'm not saying Hussein is a good guy. He's a tyrant. But he's a local tyrant. If you want to find the real All-World bully kicking sand in someone's face, try looking at the actions of the U.S. in any given playground.

Let's stop threating unilateral action that is only guaranteed to kill civilians. It's embarrassing.
