No, Seriously, What Are They Calling The Team?

This week, with St. Paul mayor Norm Coleman, Minnesota native and former NHL star Neal Broten, and the Stanley Cup on hand, team owners unveiled the new name and team logo for the St. Paul National Hockey League franchise.

They chose "The Minnesota Wild". I know, it sounds like a Discovery channel program more than a hockey team. I shouldn't say they chose it, either. The name was selected in a straw poll. I do mean straw, as in the Scarecrow form the Wizard of Oz. You know, the one with no brain.

What were they thinking?

So that's the logo. The press guide describes the color scheme as Iron Range Red, Forest Green, harvest gold, and Minnesota Wheat. How clever. Unfortunately, the team plays in Saint Paul, not in the Iron Range, and not in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Moreover, the NHL season goes from October through just into June. Around here, we call that time of year "winter", and El Niño or not, that means you won't be seeing any Forest Green or Harvest gold.

Given that you won't be walking around in the Wild, either, I thought I'd offer, one last time, an alternate name that accurately describes walking around St. Paul this time of year.

Here's what I walk through every morning.

That's right, the Minnesota Slush, whose team colors could be a more fitting Black Ice, Plowed-Over Snow, and Exhaust Grey. As an accent I added Bridge-Freezes-Before-Road Cautionary Yellow. Enjoy!

If you still haven't seen them, I had plenty of suggestions for team names.
