Installing files:

Scenery Directory Path

We recommend installing all third-party scenery in a directory path separate from the Flight Simulator Software. This makes uninstalling and reinstalling much simpler. We have a directory called 'Flight' that contains separate directories for all our flying related files. Here is our structure.

D:\
	FLIGHT Our 'Master' flight directory
FS6 We installed Flight Simulator 6.0 here
			TEXTURE Copy common textures here
			PILOTS Copy .STN files here
FS_SCENERY Our third party scenery directory
S_MN Dirctory for the Southern Minnesota scenery
				SCENERY Copy .BGL files here
TEXTURE Copy custom texture files here

1. Uninstall Previous Versions of our Minnesota Scenery.

Skip to step 2 if you do not have Minnesota scenery already installed.

Select the 'World Menu,' then select 'Scenery Library.' If you get a message telling you to consult Pilot's Help, ignore it if you dare by clicking the ok button. Don't worry, we'll guide you through the arcane details of managing scenery add-ons. Select the 'Files' button next. You'll see a list of scenery areas. Find the scenery you want to delete and click on it. When it is highlighted, click the 'Delete' button.

After deleting the scenery from Flight Simulator's scenery library, you must still delete the files and the directory they were stored in.

2. Create a sub-directory called S_MN.

Our S_MN directory is in our ‘D:\Flight\’ directory. Where you choose to put your S_MN directory is your choice.

With this documentation, substitute ‘..\FS_Scenery’ with your path on your system. On our system it is D:\Flight\FS_Scenery.

3. Create a temporary directory on your hard drive

copy "S_MN.exe" to this new directory.

4. Run the ".exe" at the DOS prompt or double click on it from MS Windows Explorer.

All of the required files you need for this installation will be ‘un-zipped’ into the directory you ran the executable in.

5. Create the following sub-directories:

[your scenery path]\S_MN
	Scenery
	Texture

Again, here is the structure we prefer:

D:\
	FLIGHT Our 'Master' flight directory
FS6 We installed Flight Simulator 6.0 here
			TEXTURE Common textures here
			PILOTS Copy .STN files here
FS_SCENERY Out third party scenery directory
S_MN Dirctory for the Southern Minnesota scenery
				SCENERY Copy .BGL files here
TEXTURE Copy custom texture files here
Copy all files beginning with ‘SMN’ into the S_MN Scenery directory.
	COPY SMN*.* D:\Flight\FS_Scenery\S_MN\Scenery
Copy all files ending with ‘R8’ and 'OAV' into the S_MN Texture directory.
	COPY *.R8 D:\Flight\FS_Scenery\S_MN\Texture
	COPY *.OAV D:\Flight\FS_Scenery\S_MN\Texture
Copy the ‘STN’ file into a sub-directory called "Pilots" found in your Flight Sim95 program directory.

For our system, FltSim95.exe is installed in the following path: D:\Flight\FS6. When installing FS95 was installed it made a directory called ‘Pilots.’ This ‘Pilots’ directory is the location ‘STN’ files should be copied on your system.

COPY *.stn D:\Flight\FS6\PILOTS

6. Configure MS FS95:

From the main pull-down menu select 'World', then 'Scenery Library':

Select the ‘Files…’ button.

Select the ‘Add’ button.

Type the path of our copied ‘BGL’ files, a title for the scenery, select 'Local' scenery type, and click the 'Scenery Area Active' box. Also, enter '0001' in the 'Scenery Area Layer' field. This ensures that the default Microsoft scenery does not conflict with the Southern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin scenery.

Fill out the Scenery Area form as shown below, then select ‘OK’.

Almost done! You should now see the Southern Minnesota scenery in the Scenery Areas list. Select ‘OK’ twice and you are ready to fly!

7. Take off from Crystal Airport:

Select 'Flight' from the main menu, then 'Select Flight.' Locate 'Crystal' in the list of available flights and click OK.

Follow the yellow taxiline to the left until you get to runway 23. Take off and enjoy the scenery!

Many local airports are included in this package including all public airports in Southern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin.

For piloting advice, consult the ‘Quick Reference’ on the back of the MS FS95 Book. This ‘Quick Reference’ material is a good place to find out how to look around outside the airplane using ‘key strokes’ from the keyboard.

Have fun and safe flying! Blue Skies!!
