Usually, the first time I listen to a CD, I attach a Post-It to the jewel case, note down the times of the songs (I hate it when the times aren't listed), whether they're good or not in a simple rating system, and other quick pertinent information such as how good the song is. This is entirely subjective, of course, and every now and then I change my mind, but so far the system works pretty well.
Not all CDs are catalogued by individual song, which is in a separate file than the CDs. There is more information tracked on the database. I won't get into the details here, except for the rating system. It's pretty simple: In the 'rating' field, "x" for a good song and "xx" for a great song. After a while, that wasn't enough. I added another field for 'one of the greatest songs of all time', which had an 'x' or not.
As of January 2005, I have tracked 541 CDs representing 7852 songs (minus a few glitches in my numbering sequence), roughly half of my collection.
What you see here is the top songs from that list. The first list is all the songs with the 'greatest song' field marked. The second is all the songs with the 'rating' field marked with two x's, minus duplications.
If you're confused about some of the choices, look at the artist. I have a lot of covers that I prefer to the original.
It took me about a half hour do Export the file into text and add the formatting. Back to database.
Dear Mr. Romm, I am writing to tell you that I was looking over your list and was proud to find a song on it that I wrote (HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS by RED CLAY RAMBLERS). Thank you for giving my Sat. Nite of web surfing a very gratifying and much needed thrill. I see you are a Steeleye Fan too which I was (and am though haven't heard any of their stuff in a long time!) Thanks again! Mike Craver
