Shockwave 20th Anniversary Press Release

For Immediate Release, if not sooner

The 20th Anniversary of Shockwave will be broadcast September 25, one of the longest running science fiction radio programs in Earth's history.

Special Time, 3:00-4:00pm (normally 3:30-4:00) on Fresh Air Radio, KFAI 90.3FM Mpls, 106.7FM in St. Paul.

Update: The show will feature an interview with Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura.

Produced by David E Romm. Dave has been a fan of science fiction ever since he could read, and has been active in the local science fiction community. He was Guest of Honor at Minicon in 1990. He produces Shockwave, also wearing the hats of playwright, actor and director. He co-scripted and co-starred in the locally produced documentary on Fresh Air Radio "Little City In Space". Professionally, he's a web designer and network consultant who has been an instructor at the University of Minnesota and Brown Institute.

Co-host Brian Westley is a computer programmer who has won the Obfuscated C contest an obfuscated number of times. A playwright and web designer himself, he also co-administers the Firesign Theatre site.

Co-host Doug Friauf, "Colonel Cinema", reviews movies, tv and literature. He's a computer programmer and the rolling embassador for the "Mpls in '73" parties at Worldcon Science Fiction Conventions. Doug was Guest of Honor at Diversicon in 1996.

In the summer of 1979, three valiant producers at a fledgling radio station started a radio program on which to play science fiction music. Six weeks later, they recruited members of the local sf fan community and changed the world. Well, changed our little corner of it.

On September 19, 1979, Shockwave was reborn into a very weird radio program. In 20 years, there has been no set format, relying on the talent and interests of Shockwave Riders. Dave Romm was in that group of fans that fateful first day, and has been the only constant over this period of time.

Shockwave specializes in original science fiction humor, but any show could feature interviews, reviews of recent books and movies, discussion of computer hardware and software, keeping our audience abreast of the space program, odd music or specialty theme shows.

Science Fiction is very well represented here in Minnesota. Most of Governor Jesse Ventura's film roles have been in science fiction movies. Shockwave has reported on and encouraged the art form while reporting on current and future events in the world of science. Shockwave has helped keep Minnesota amused, informed and downright weird.
