Lancelot Link, Secret Chip
Here are some links to other places. I tested these out before I put them up, but cannot guarantee that they are still around at any given moment. Last update 2/15/00.
Dave Romm's Picks Until I Get Tired Of Putting Them Here:
- SelectSmart has a nifty site where you can use The Original Presidential Candidate Selector to find out which candidate for president most matches your views, among many other useful political tools. The politics section is only one part of this varied site.
- Extraterrestrials probably watch the weather at Area 51 closely.
Links of guests on the broadcast shows
- Shockwave Rider Jake Esau has a site for his appearances and videos as Count Dracula. He also appears as Edgar Allen Poe and many others.
- Tim Lyons of ZTV (the American one, not the European one) has a site for his local cable tv show (think Wayne's World without a budget but more video) and his Greatful Dead Hour.
- We had Terry Garey on because she was part of an exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, but she also has a book on home winemaking and does some fine poetry.
- SETI@home. Help the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence by downlowading a program that runs in the background or as a screensaver. Over a million people have contributed their unused CPU time. Will we find life? The odds aren't good, but the attempt is worthwhile. If we succeed, you'll be a footnote to the start of the New Worlds Order.
Shockwave Riders
Shockwave is on the radio station KFAI 90.3FM in Mpls and 106.7FM in St. Paul, who's current motto is "A Different Radio Station Every Hour". This links to the schedule and other information.
- Brian Westley is a longtime Shockwave Rider who now has a page under construction. It contains links to Magic, the Gathering; subGenius stuff; and the International Obfuscated C Code Contest, which he keeps winning.
- Doug Friauf maintains a movie database. (Currently under reconstruction.)
- Jerry Stearns is a longtime Shockwave Rider, and his show Sound Affects leads into Shockwave on KFAI.
- The Flash Girls has pictures and info about their CDs and bios of Emma Bull and the Fabulous Lorraine.
- Steve Brust has a web site about himself, his books and record.
- David Dyer-Bennet maintains his own web page with links to photography and photo equipment for sale, science fiction links and more. He started or maintains several other pages referenced here.
- Tom Digby, poet/essayist, has a series of pages which you can view by index or take the scenic route. You can listen to some of his poems.
- Matthew B. Tepper Is a musician now in LA and provided music for most of the early episodes of "Cerebus the Aardvark," and did some voices for one of the "Food Wars" episodes. He has a page with diverse music links including his Berlioz page.
- Roger Davidson was 16 years old on his 7/29/95 Shockwave guest appearance, and we talked about sf movies and web pages and stuff. The Teen Critic site is still up and Roger (no longer a teen) makes the occasional appearance.
Fans and Fannish Pages
There are a staggering amount of fans with web sites of various kinds, and I'm only going to list a few of them.
- Minicon is an old science fiction convention with a new twist.
- CONvergence is a new science fiction convention in Minneapolis that has inherited much of what Minicon cast off. Their 1999 convention was good, and the next one promises to be even better.
- Harry Knowles was one of the Guests of Honor at CONvergence, and maintains the aint-it-cool-news page.
- David Langford has been publishing Ansible for over 20 years, and maintains the Ansible Archives
- Stu Shiffman is a Hugo Award Winning artist and fan of many divers interests. He and Andi Shechter maintain The Roscoe Page, "A medley of eclectic interests in mysteries, science fiction and art", with a rather incredible number of interesting links.
- Nancy Lebovitz's Calligraphic Button Catalogue has all the aphorisms you'll ever want to pin to an article of clothing.
- The Plokta Cabal maintains a web site with links to issues of their fanzine and the members of the cabal.
- I've known Steve McDonald for close to 25 years and have never met him, but I keep encountering him in various parts of the world so might as well meet him in cyberspace.
- Al Sirois is on the web with his Jazz Police site.
Some alternate news and views
- On-line magazine Salon is a pretty good source of information and opinion.
- The Ethical Spectacle is a monthly web zine with articles on various political and ethical topics. I guest edited the The March 1996 issue on Ethics and Science Fiction, and the June 1995 issue has my article The Liberal 60s Were Better Than the Conservative 90s.
- Cecil Adams' The Straight Dope is a weekly column on everything and anything. There are four Straignt Dope books out, which are highly recommended, but the web site contains an astonishing amount of information, including the current column and reader responses.
- Tired of scandals and dirty politicians? Too bad, because they're here to stay. The Skeleton Closet has the dirt on all the candidates. Separate the real stuff from the Drudge rumormongers.
- Daryl Cagle's Professional Cartoon Index has national and international editorial cartoons as well as some of the standard funnies.
Other Miscellaneous Humor
- The Capitol Steps page talks about the political humorists' allbums and you can download songs and stuff.
- There's a book on Computer Humour, with outdated links to my script and has related reading.
- The late Pat Paulsen is not forgotten at Pat Paulson for President, which has some pictures, his campaign speeches from the Smothers Brothers Show in the 60s, his 1996 presidential campaign and more. Shockwave endorsed his bid for president.
- My hero Weird Al Yankovic has a site with tour info and QuickTime movies of some songs and so on.
- Tired of real psychoanalysis? Try this personality test.
Television Links
- Almost every obscure tv show you ever partially remember is likely to be at the TV Party. They're the first place that ever mentioned Do Do The Kid From Outer Space, not to mention Soupy Sales, Beany and Cecil, and much more. They also have regular tv fare through the 80s, and leap into controversy with such penetrating questions as "Why were there two Darins? Did witchcraft play a role?"
- The folks at the cable channel Comedy Central have gone all out, with information, movie clips, Java, updated attempts at political humor and more than I'm willing to explore at the moment. Not for the faint of heart or slow of modem.
- The Sci-Fi Channel page has information about the cable channel, which is closer to sci-fi than science fiction.
- Info on Davey and Goliath is on a different page. But if you want to revel in Clutch Cargo, Beany and Cecil, Underdog and many more obscure and deservedly obscure cartoons go to Toon Tracker.
Other Links
- New adventures of Dr. Who on audio CDs now available.
- The Internet Movie Database is still an invaluable source of information on movies and television. Want to know every picture and tv show DeForest Kelley was in? Check here.
- Gerry Reid is a Professional Speaker, Educator, Consultant, and Author (that's his plug). His home page is interesting and upbeat.
- A good series of articles on The Roots of the Holocaust is at a page maintained by William Dubay.
