Anton's Computer StuffThese days, I consider myself a computer professional. I used to be a hobbyist, and in many ways that was more fun. When I didn't have to spend eight to ten hours a day in front of the computer for work, I was willing to spend much more time trying new things out with it or writing software for my own use. Now I use my home system as a tool, not as much as a toy. Sadly, I don't think I'll ever feel the same way that I did when my parents first bought an Apple ][+ for home, or when I saw my first Macintosh. Computers just aren't as exciting any more. Still, my wife and I have a small collection of computer stuff at home, with more to come in the future, I'm sure. My parents still have the Apple ][+ and are eagerly waiting for me to take it off their hands (and out of their closet!). Our hardware includes:
I've created a list of some of the computer software which I use and like, too. Why a Macintosh? Well, it's incredibly easy to use;I can forget that I'm using a computer and just get my work done. It's also fun and easy to program. I found a bug in Hasbro's Monopoly game which prevented my wife from using it after upgrading to MacOS 8.1. The same bug prevents it from running on any newer Macintosh systems (with the HFS Plus file system on the boot disk). Here's a patch in case you have the same problem. It turns out that Avalon Hill's "D-Day: America Invades!" software has a similar problem. Here's another patch (less tested) in case you have this game. I enjoy wandering the web, though I don't usually spend that much time on it these days. Periodically I'll copy my web notebook here in case you're curious or, like me, enjoy browsing through other people's links or lives. |
