 A long-standing tradition on the Internet is to figure out who and what you are by the evaluation of a string of letters, numbers and symbols. Initialy, this started with "The Geek Code" to list just how "geeky" a person was. Well, one thing led to another and -nowadays- there are codes for practically every group of people on the planet! So, here on this page, I present to you my four, relevant codes. In addition, I also provide my own contribution to the whole "Code Craze" by submitting for your approval, "The Fannish Code" ... to define those of us who are members of Science Fiction/Fantasy Fandom. Well, for a long time now, there has been the debate amongst Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror fans as to what makes a real fan (or what are the qualities possessed by the "True Fen"). I have never been able to answer this to any real satisfaction of anyone and have -quite frankly- stopped trying. Instead, I've devised a rating system similar to (and inspired by) the Geek Code.
For those of you who feel I've missed a few catagories on this code, feel free to let me know or send me your suggestions. Personally, I find this sort of thing fun and hope it goes on for some time...
The latest update removed the "Religious Conventionality" flag, as it was mostly ignored by just about everyone. Eventually, I'd like to find a way to flag various faiths and beliefs, but not until I can figure out a way to do it so that people accept it and want to use it...
Some Basics:
The root code for being a fan is 'Fn'. This is immediately followed by a two-letter capitolized code to determine specifically what KIND of Fan you are ('Faanish Types'). After the first rating, include a space and the next code. Each code is either a single or double letter notation followed by a suffix. The suffixes are listed in the tables below. Sometimes, you may have more than one suffix when separated by a modifier. The modifiers are:
? : Indicates that you haven't decided where you fall in the category, or that you have no opinion. This replaces the normal suffix.
@ : Indicates that you normally fit the given code, but it varies from time to time. Or it may indicate that you're not completely sure. This modifier is placed between prefix and suffix, or sometimes between parts of the suffix.
/ : Indicates that you fit into more than one type. This means two or three specific types, perhaps varying depending on your mood, not uncertainty over a wide range of types. Placed between the two suffixes such as in Type of Fan (the Two-letter code that is attached to the 'Fn').
! : Indicates a positive refusal to participate in this category. Unlike ?, which means you haven't made up your mind yet, ! means you have made up your mind that you want nothing to do with this subject, for or against it. It is placed before the code.
> : Indicates that you currently fit one code, but hope to move to another in the future. Placed between two suffixes.
# : Indicates that you prefer to keep this information to yourself. This replaces the normal suffix.
Note: Some of these categories are taken from the previously mentioned codes and are paraphrased here in interests of completion. I have no desire to take credit for other people's work. Head on over to their Code pages and see for yourself! Afterall, they were my inspiration...
