This is an alternate, sequential, version of my survey. It is maintained for two reasons. First, it's my basis for creating the text version. Second, some old fashioned people prefer this one. This version is up-to-date, but is not maintained as well as the regular version. Please let me know if you see something out of wack. History:

Once upon a time, the internet was consumed mostly of newsgroups and e-mail. I spent my share of time in the rec.audio.* newsgroups. A question that kept getting asked was What's a good mail order company for component X? I suggested that someone keep track of people's comments. The next thing I knew, I was nominated and started getting e-mail to that effect. Thus the Audio Mail Order Survey was born. It was originally a text-only based documnet, but has since evolved into an interactive WWW site. Not to leave anyone out, the text version is still generated on a monthly basis.

Points of Interest:

The most popular portion of my survey is the Company Listings/Ratings section. It contains a summary of people's votes for all the companies that I keep track of. WWW users of this survey can then click on the company name and find out more information about that company. Objective information like their address, brands carried, and as much as I know. More importantly, subjective information is also available. This consists mostly of comments that people have made about that company.

The Search Company Listings (WWW users only) feature can be very helpful on narrowing down your choices. It searches the company database for keywords of your choice. It's rather primitive, but quite useful.

I try and provide a little buying advice in my Before You Buy and After You Buy sections. Those sections try and give you some guidelines on handling your purchase. Of course, common sense is your best ally.

The Feedback section (WWW edition, text readers can use e-mail) certainly cannot be overlooked. This is what makes the survey useful. It gives you the opportunity to comment on audio mail order companies or any aspect of this survey.

Epilogue:

I provide this survey on my own time in hopes of helping consumers sort out the audio mail order maze. I do this because I feel strongly about fairness and honesty. I want companies that feel the same to be rewarded. I hope this survey is both helpful to you for finding such a company and helpful to audio mail order companies in learning about what makes such a company.

Advantages:

Mail order provides you with a larger number of companies from which to work with. Often you can't find the product you need at your local stores, so mail order is the only option.

Due to a lower overhead and high-volume, mail order companies often have better pricing than local stores. In addition, many mail order companies do not charge sales tax (US). While the buyer is obligated to pay the tax to his/her state, it is rarely done (though someone recieved a 35% penality from New Jersey for not paying this tax).

Disadvantages:

Shipping charges and shipping delays.

You are typically not able to review the products before purchasing them. Some companies allow you to return products you are dissatisfied with. Charges for returning the product varies. Keep in mind that if you review a product at a local store, it costs that local store a lot of money to make the product available for review. Consider that when making your decision on where to purchase.

Service after a purchase is more difficult. You must deal with them over the phone rather than in person. You will often incur charges and larger delays for shipping the product back for repair/replacement.

It's a shady world. The lack of personal contact allows mail order companies to be a bit deceptive. Sometimes they aren't authorized for the products they sell. Sometimes they send you products/services other than what you asked for. You have to be careful.

Protect Yourself:

Keep records of everyone you talk to. Record the time you talked to them and your understanding of the conversation. Keeping your own facts straight is your first defense.

Use a credit card for Pete's sake! There are some very honest companies that won't take credit cards, but it's just not worth the risk. Credit cards offer both you and the company a form of protection. I can't stress how important this is. It's not gauranteed protection, but it's a big improvement over a check.

You may even want to go to the extreme of recording any telephone conversations with the salesfolk. This way you can prove what they said. Keep in mind that laws in most US states require that you inform them that the conversation is being recorded.

Credit Card Surcharges:

I wish to note that I've confirmed with MasterCard, that they do not allow for stores to impose a surcharge to the customer when the customer is using a MasterCard credit card. Visa has a similiar statement on their web page. American Express tells me they are opposed to surcharging credit card transactions and continues to say that many states (US) have laws against such procedures.

Are They Authorized:

Ask them if they're authorized for mail order for the product you want. That's not the same as being authorized for the in-store sales. If they're not authorized for mail order for the product in question, your warranty may not apply. To be sure, you may want to contact the manufacturer and ask them.

From what I've been able to determine, the brands below are not authorized to be sold via mail order. Please note that these are general policies and exceptions do pop up from time to time. You may wish to contact the manufacturer concerning the specific company you are concerned with.

Bait And Switch:

Bait and switch tactics are not unusual in the world of mail order (or used cars). They will not have the advertised item in stock and attempt to convince you to purchase an item other than the one you wanted. This can be illegal. It's a fuzzy line, because sometimes they are simply trying to give you good advice, but other times they are doing so only because that item will make them more profit on the other item. As a general rule, don't purchase an item that you did not plan to purchase when you first called.

Check The Equipment Out

Sometimes mail order companies sell you a demo or factory refurb as new. A demo unit is one that has been used on show floors as a demonstration unit. A factory refurb is a unit that was defective and sent back to the factory for repairs (note: This is not necessarily a bad thing because the item is usually hand inspected). To sell a factory refurb, demo, or used item as if they were new is illegal, but surprisingly common with some sleazy mail order companies.

Demos or used equipment are often a little beat up. They may also be missing documentation (warranty card, etc). Also, check to make sure that the serial number on the instructions, warranty card, unit itself, and box all match. If they do not (or are missing on the box or the unit), then it is likely that you do not have a new or authorized unit.

It is much more difficult to tell if a unit has been refurbished at the factory. Perhaps if you send a letter (or phone call) to the factory with the serial number of the unit, they can tell you if it's been in for repairs. It is important to note that misrepresentation of a factory refurb is most commonly done by the dealer, but I've had a report of a case where the manufacturer misrepresented the unit.

Complain

If you're not satisified with the results, for whatever reason, contact the mail order company first. Explain the problem to them. Keep records of everyone you talk to. Record the time you talked to them and your understanding of the conversation. Keeping your own facts straight is your first defense.

Often the person answering the phone is unable or unwilling to help you. Move you way up the chain of command until you get to someone who has the authority to resolve the conflict.

Refute The Charges

If you didn't get what you ordered, refute the charges on your credit card. If you didn't use a credit card, you should have. You now have a powerful company helping you investigate the problem on your behalf. Call your credit card company to refute the charges and make sure you follow it up with a written letter. There is a time limit as to how long you can wait to do this (I want to say 60 days, but I'm not sure). Log everything!
