Sloan's Nymph
This is probably my favourite searching fly on both lake and stream. I tie
it in a variety of weights and sizes and took the pattern from a booklet
by Tony Sloan entitled The Truth About Trout Flies. In the booklet the fly
was called the Green Nymph and built basically of possum tail fur and acrylic
green-brown carpet wool.
My version is as follows -
Hook: 8 - 14 long shank
Weight: As necessary - I use up to 16 turns of lead wire!
Rib: Oval gold tinsel
Tail and Thorax: Brush possum tail fur in one legth if possible. The grey hair roots forming the tail.
Body: A blended mix of green, brown and fiery brown seals fur in the ratio 1:0.5:0.5.
Take the dubbing through to the start of the thorax and rib with oval tinsel.
Carry the dubbing forward to the head and bring the possum fur thorax over
the dubbing and tie in at the head, trimming away the excess.
