LUMMEPUPPE VARIANT
Background
This fly is a variant of a series of nymphs designed by the Finnish architect
Simo Lumme. The fly is extremely simple and yet a good imitation of caddis
pupaes/larvaes. It can even be used as an early emerger if the weighting
is dropped.
Tying instructions:
-------------------
Hook: Mustad 9672 #10 (3x long) (alt. Mustad 80 050)
Body: Light brown antron mix
Abdomen: 50% dark brown rabbit and 50% dark brown antron mixed
Ribbing: Thin oval silver tinsel
Weighting: Lead wire (omitted in my samples)
Thread: Any dark thread, e.g Danville 6/0 black
If you want to weight the fly, affix the lead wire with the thread and wind
it on the front part of the hook shank. Ensure sufficient space at the eye
for a small head.
Fix the ribbing to the hook and proceed a bit into the bend. Dub the body
on the latter 2/3 of the hook shank (alternatively use a dubbing loop).
The dubbing should be as rough as possible.
Turn the ribbing forwards over the dubbed body and fix it in front. Insert
the rabbit/antron blend in a new dubbing loop and make the abdomen. Secure
the thread with a couple of whip finishes and cut off.
To give the nymph the desired translucent effect, brush it with backwards
strokes using velcro/.22 cal. bore cleaning brush or similar. After this
treatment, the dubbing fibres should be laying along the body backwards.
This is my signature file. Isn't it lovely
