Whitlock's Hellgrammite
Hook: Dai-Riki 700B (Original pattern calls for 6XL straight eye)
Tail: Charcoal goose biots
Abdomen: Olive dun fur
Abdomen top: Charcoal raffia or Swiss Straw
Rib: Fine copper wire
Thorax: Olive dun fur
Legs: Dark speckled hen
Wingcase: Charcoal raffia or Swiss Straw
Antennae: Charcoal goose biots
This fly is tied point up.
1. Dub a small ball of fur right at the bend.
2. Tie in the biots separated by the dubbing ball.
3. Wrap one turn of dubbing over base of biots.
4. Tie in Raffia.
5. Wrap one turn of dubbing, and then tie in copper wire.
6. Dub a thick abdomen forward to within ~1/4" of bend in shank.
7. Pull Raffia forward and secure.
8. Wrap copper wire forward (~4 wraps) and secure.
9. Dub forward to bend in shank.
10. Pull Raffia forward over dubbing and secure as first section of wingcase.
11. Tie in hen hackle by tip, shiny side down.
12. Dub a heavy thorax half way to the eye.
13. Pull hen hackle forward and secure.
14. Pull Raffia forward and secure as second section of wingcase.
15. Advance thread forward to eye and dub a small ball of fur.
16. Tie in biots for antennae and wrap thread back to Raffia.
17. Dub almost to eye, and then secure Raffia as third section of wingcase.
18. Trim Raffia and wrap a head.
19. Whip finish and cement head.
20. Pick out dubbing to create a buggy appearance and blend body sections.
This may not be the way Dave tied this fly (I should have asked him when
I saw him at the Midwest Fly Show last weekend), but it worked for an inexperienced
tier like me.
