Favored writing related links

Writing is fraught with questions… What is standard manuscript format?  What is the proper procedure for submitting a short story, or a novel?  Where do you find addresses for magazines that take submissions?  How do you identify a legitimate agent, publisher, or contract?  What is a novella anyway?

Below are some sites that I've found helpful in both the research and business aspects of writing.  This page is a work in perpetual progress.

AuthorsLawyer This site "is intended to serve authors, and incidentally publishers and agents interested in a pro-author perspective."  If you have a question about writing related laws (what is a copyright, for example) this is a great resource.  Don't expect to get specific legal advice this way, however.

The Black Hole takes the guesswork out of submission response times.  This site lists  actual response times from paying markets (as opposed to intended response times).  Writers are encouraged to contribute their own data to keep this as accurate as possible.

forwriters  keeps a gigantic listing of resources for writers of all genres (even if you think you aren't genre).  From agents, to publishers, to writing exercises; you'll find it here.

Locus is pretty much the trade magazine for F & SF writers.  The online version doesn't include access to all the content, but it does keep fairly current on news, conventions, and upcoming/recently published books.

The Minnesota State Arts Board has grant information, application classes, and other programs potentially useful to artists of all kinds.  If you don't live in Minnesota, it can't hurt to check and see if your state has something like this.  Writers are artists, and grants are wonderful, if you can get them.

The Open Book  Minnesota's center for reading, writing, and book arts, located in Minneapolis.  You can take classes on paper making, book binding, press work, and calligraphy.  There are rooms available for rent for writers who can't work at home.  This is also the current location of The Loft Literary Center.

P&E  Preditors and Editors is one of the most useful sites for any writer researching possible agents and editors.  See who has questionable practices.

Paula Fleming keeps an online listing of science fiction and fantasy markets.

Ralan  has one of the best, most thorough and current, online listings of science fiction and fantasy markets.

Scifi.com  This is the sci-fi channel's companion site.  It's a good place to get the latest sci-fi news for all media available.  They also run a professional grade webzine.

SFWA  The Science Fiction Writers of America is the professional organization of science fiction and fantasy writers in the US.  Most useful to the writer new to the business side is the Writer Beware section.  This contains a lot of the maxims any writer should know about agents and publishers, such as "money flows to the author."

Speculations Interested in market reports and knowing which publications have died? If you're a writer who wants to be read, this has been a tremendous resource in the past.  Editor Kent also hosts a free writing BBS called the Rumor Mill.

TOTU Tales of the Unanticipated is a high quality semi-pro magazine operating out of the Twin Cities.  Check the site for guidelines, since there are reading periods.  I could dedicate an entire page to links of magazines, but I just don't have the time.  This one is here because I have a story in the Strange Romance issue (#25).

The Writers Free Reference is a listing of links that may be useful to writers whether you are researching a topic or learning about standard business practices.
