Lance Commander's Trip for the Summer of 1996

A friend of mine and I flew into Boston on a hot summers day to do a northeast coast tour. From Boston we drove down and took a ferry to Long Island New York visit my cousin Chris, her husband Dave and their son Peter.

They were very warm and generous hosts while we stayed with them. They showed us the beaches and vineyards of northeastern Long Island and its many quaint villages. We then headed along the coasts of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts towards Martha’s Vineyard Island.

At Martha’s Vineyard we shopped and rode busses around the island. The island had many long and sweeping beaches as shown in the picture and many Victorian homes. Next we went to Plymouth to see the Mayflower (replica) and plymouth rock (the rock the pilgrim landed on).

We were amazed that this small ship hauled over 100 pilgrims, livestock, items for survival and trade and a dismantled boat (the larger one in front) below deck (and there is only one floor and its dark) for nine weeks across the ocean. We proceeded up the New England coast to Acadia National Park.

Its an mountainous island with a rocky coast dropping into the Atlantic was scenic until the fog rolled in. We continued to Campobello Island to sight see and ride the ferries. Fog obscured any scenic pictures we might have taken. Our trip then took us to Cape Brenton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada where the scenery is reminiscent of Scotland.

Cape Brenton Highlands National Park on the north side or the island was mountainous, rocky and very scenic. You could see from the scenic overlooks water spray rising from the blow holes of whales and eagles soaring over head. This is a very pristine place and always hold a special place in my thoughts. On the way back down the coast we stopped at The Rocks Provential Park and saw the flower pot formations as seen in this picture which were caused by the 30+ feet high Bay of Fundy tides.

After a couple of days of heading in the direction of Boston, we arrived at my Aunt Marion, Uncle Bob and cousin Linda’s house in Winslow, Maine.

My uncle Bob gave us the grand tour of Winslow and Waterville (they’re old mill towns) and brought us to the local fancy restaurant for lobster dinners. They were very welcoming and warm in their hospitality they displayed. Bob wasn’t ready for the first picture, so I took a second one to include him (Marion had already left for work by then).

Next came the White Mountains of New Hampshire where the clouds and fog kept us off Mount Washington but we improvised by taking a few hikes to the waterfalls of the area.
