This chapter is all about Emmitt's experience playing football
when he was younger, when he started to develop his skills as a
running back. He also talks about how he "raised hell" when he was
a kid. This also the chapter where he meets Dwight Thomas.
Book Excerpt:
Strange as it may sound, I never encountered racism until I got
older and left for college. My parents never mentioned it much either.
They talked about black history and black pride, but they never rallied
agaisn't white people. As for the city of Pensacola, I'm certain there
were racists living there - not because it's the South, but because
there are racists all over the globe. Nobody ever put their racism
on me, though. And I can look back right now and see football fields
I played on in Pensacola, fields with black kids and white kids running
around together, wrestling with each other, helping each other up after
a hit. I can still see it, because that's the way it was.
