Family News: Christmas 2008 Edition

Merry Christmas and a happy 2009 to all – it's time once again for the Kibat family annual update!

Mike observed his six-year anniversary with UnitedHealth Group this past February. His astronomical and angling interests took a back seat this past year to other priorities but he still found time to enjoy Minnesota’s star-lit skies and occasionally ‘wet a line’. He is in the final months of his two-year commitment to the confirmation program at church.

Glenda continues to work as a nursing consultant for School District 287 serving young adults with mental and physical disabilities. She is active as a coordinator for Dan’s Angelica Cantanti choir and assisted again this year with our church’s 3rd–5th grade musical. She got her right knee replaced this summer, and enjoys a vastly improved quality of life, with both knees now fully 'bionic'.

Natalie entered her sophomore year at the Eau Claire campus of the University of Wisconsin. She survived her anatomy and physiology final (Christmas miracles DO happen!) and she's ranked in the 'top 30%' of her class. She remains committed to her Communication Sciences and Disorders major. Natalie plans to nanny this coming summer to fund her college and living expenses, and maybe tuck away a few dollars for a desired trip to Seattle.

Dan started 8th grade this year. Over the summer, he landed the role of 'Horton the elephant' in a production of 'Seussical the Musical'. He learned just before Christmas break that he'll perform the role of the plant in his school's production of “Little Shop of Horrors”. This is his 4th year singing with Angelica Cantanti and his Concert Choir had wonderful performance opportunities this past year including a concert with professional men's choral group Cantus, featured performers at the 2008 Federal Duck Stamp competition held here in Bloomington, and a performance at the 3rd annual Minnesota Choir Director's Association conference at St. Olaf college in Northfield, MN. His voice definitely changed this year—now his solos sound much more 'manly', and he's more often singing baritone with his dad during church than alto with his mom. Dan helps with first grade Sunday School and will be confirmed this May. He's moved up in the world, 'meeting a girl' at summer camp, getting his own Facebook page and receiving a cell phone this Christmas – no longer the 'social outcast' he insistently characterized himself to his disbelieving parents!

The family made a camping trip to Itasca State Park this summer, and enjoyed our annual trek to Alexandria, MN for a week with friends relaxing, eating and fishing. The highlight of the week—a paintball free-for-all with the adults and kids, almost 20 in number, followed by several days comparing welts and bruises. Mike returned to Florida in February for the launch of shuttle mission STS-122 with Duchman family's former foreign exchange student Hans Schlegel aboard. The family also trekked down to Iowa for a couple visits – once for the 80th birthday celebration of Mike's mom and then more recently for a whirlwind weekend to celebrate Christmas with both Mike and Glenda's families.

All was not sunshine and roses this past year – we had to put down our long-time family pet, Quincy. Aside from his health problems, he was a great cat. Even in the last minutes of his life, he was 'loving up' the vet and her assistant. A friend shared his belief that God puts pets into our lives as living examples of His unconditional love. Quincy most certainly fulfilled that mission and will be missed.

Our prayer on your behalf for the coming year comes from Paul's letter to the Christians at Ephesus:

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe...”
