Timber!
I think the last basketball game I saw in person was the Utah Jazz vs. the Detroit Pistons back in 1985 or 1986 when I was in grad school in Salt Lake City. Since then, I've only had a passing interest which amounted to occasionally checking the standings in the paper to see how the Minnesota Timberwolves were doing.

But lately I've gotten pretty interested in the T'Wolves current playoff run. They've gone deeper in the playoffs than they've ever gone before and the games have been fun to watch. Whether they go all the way or not doesn't matter too much since they've provided plenty of excitement in the absence of any MN Vikings activity!

Tony Randall
One of the best mentions of Tony Randall's death was on "The Late Show with David Letterman". After Dave's incredible tribute to Warren Zevon after the musician's death from cancer last year, he talked about Randall on Tuesday night with incredible sincerity, fondness and respect. It's slightly ironic and quite touching that one of the funniest and goofiest celebrities gives some of the most heartfelt, honest, and affectionate tributes to those who have passed on.

Feed the World
It's been a good reading day.

In the latest issue of Wired, Richard Manning writes about Super Organics and how the natural smart breeding of crops, combined with an open source technology model, is leading the way in a revolution of agriculture that will, as he writes, create "nutritious, delicious, safe, abundant crops that require less pesticide, fertilizer, and irrigation - a new generation of food that will please the consumer, the producer, the activist, and the FDA."

Let's eat!
Appalled
David Remnick's short article in The New Yorker about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American military personnel is one of the best descriptions I've read so far about the scandal and the appalling and arrogant response from the Bush administration.

My Favorite Tumor
The description on the back cover of the paperback edition of Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven refers to his collection of stories as being "darkly comic". Which they are, and so much more. One of my favorite stories in the book is "The Approximate Size of My Favorite Tumor", which describes how one man's undying sense of humor affects his life after he learns he is dying of terminal cancer. The way Alexie writes about how the humor affects the tumor and how the tumor affects the humor is funny, touching and maybe the best "darkly comic" story in the book.

There's Gold in Them Thar Hills
I've become quite a fan of HBO's Deadwood. The overwhelming amount of foul language takes some getting used to, but the story lines are compelling and the characters quite interesting (in part due to the excellent skills of actors like Robin Weigert and Ian McShane). Whether it's onstage or on film, in the Old West or present day, things like loyalty, justice and complex relationships always make for good drama.
