"There be whales here..."
It's unlikely that Keisha Castle-Hughes will win the Academy Award for Best Actress, but her performance in Whale Rider was a marvelously fresh, honest and memorable debut.

As a director, it's always exciting to see such natural ability and instincts and a joy to work with someone who uses their inexperience to fuel their curiosity and desire to do a good job.

Bravest
I watched a repeat of NFL Films' The Bravest Team today on The NFL Network's Football America. It's an incredible documentary about the New York Fire Department's football team, The Bravest, and how the events of Sept. 11, 2001 forever changed the players, coaches and founders of the team. It's an emotional, fascinating and inspiring dedication to some of the strongest, most sensitive, and bravest people who were immediately affected by the tragedy of 9/11 and how something like football helps them endure and remember those who were lost.

On the Road
One of the best things about traveling in and around Saint Paul is Shepard Road, which along with Warner Road, provides a convenient and scenic route along the Mississippi River all the way from the East side, past downtown, and eventually ending up at the end of West 7th Street and Hwy. 5, which easily leads to the Mpls./St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America.

Vehicle Woes
The combination of bad timing, 12" of snow, and aging mechanics made for a pretty bad day yesterday.

After picking up Ma to give her a ride home, we got stuck in traffic in downtown St. Paul. Nothing was moving and although we could see a police officer holding traffic up ahead at the intersection, there was no noticeable reason for traffic to be at a standstill. The minutes ticked by as we sat motionless in a long line of cars. Eventually, an unmarked police car sped by with its lights flashing. And then a marked police car did the same. And then a couple of snowmobiles went past. They were followed by another snowmobile with the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup strapped to the back in an enclosed plexi-glass case. That sled was followed by more snowmobile and police escort vehicles. After the entourage passed, we moved up in line about a half a block and ending up sitting for another five or ten minutes as the police tried to resolve the traffic mess that had been created.

After dropping Ma off at home, my truck promptly got stuck in the parking lot of her apartment building. My tires would just spin on the hard snow-packed pavement. I found I could back up fine, but the truck couldn't move forward an inch. Several passers-by help by trying to push me forward, but once I finally got in the alley, the truck was moving more sideways rather than forward. Since I could still back up, I was able to maneuver around several parked cars and successfully back out of the alley and into the street. Where the same thing happened and I was stuck in the middle of traffic from all four directions. Again, several very nice and helpful people try to push me out of the way. One of them noticed during all the pushing and spinning that my rear right wheel was locked up not spinning at all. We both thought the parking brake might be stuck on, (I had used it in the parking lot of Ma's apartment) but several attempts at engaging and releasing the brake made no difference. After a lot of effort, we managed to get the truck out of the way and into a reserved parking lot for the University of St. Thomas. My frustration level and blood pressure were skyrocketing at that point and I was beginning to worry about making it home and then to rehearsal on time. As I called Heather and began to figure out where to find a tow truck, I continually tried driving forward, but the spinning continued and I could still only drive backwards. So, I engaged and released the parking brake several times in succession and somehow it finally released and I was back in normal driving mode.

I raced home, ate a quick dinner and left for rehearsal. It was at that point I noticed that the gas gauge was "in the red", indicating a severe lack of fuel. But I was running late and decided to risk not stopping for gas and see if I could make it to rehearsal. Which I did, but ended up asking my A.D. to follow me to the gas station after rehearsal, just in case. I made it the few block to the gas station where I filled the 15 gallon gas tank with 15.008 gallons!

Definitely not a good travel day.

Super Sunday
A & E's Breakfast with the Arts had another great episode on this morning featuring B.B. King performing some of his greatest hits.

Combined with some warm muffins and the Sunday Star Tribune, it was a pretty good start to Super Bowl Sunday.

Now if it would just stop snowing!
