Chapter Two: Literature Review
Summary
Attachment disorders are
emerging as a major problem in our culture. With an increase of normative
patterns of child care that emphasize infant independence and parental
convenience over the needs of the infant, we will likely see an even larger
increase in the population affected by attachment disorders in the future.
This literature review sought to use knowledge from multiple disciplines
to introduce attachment parenting as a practical approach for the reduction
of attachment disorders and the promotion of emotionally secure children.
By reviewing the theory of attachment and the reported causes and suggestions
for prevention of attachment disorders it becomes clear that many of the
current parenting practices fall short of the mark in providing the level
of security needed by infants. A curriculum teaching about attachment and
introducing attachment parenting, with its shift to parenting behaviors
that make responsiveness more important and also more natural, would be
an excellent intervention approach for tomorrow's parents.
