Me and Dad getting ready for my 1st Enduro, Backus MN 1987. Yes we really brought all this stuff!

ARE YOU READY FOR YOUR FIRST ENDURO?

Enduro riding is for fun and you are probably more ready than you think! Don't be discouraged by magazine pictures of impossibly difficult obstacles and events. These "killer" events are rare - that's why they are in the magazines. There are numerous "family" enduros. The following is a list of answers to common questions of those people thinking about entering their first enduro.

How Good a Rider Do I Need To Be?

You need to feel comfortable about riding your bike off road over simple obstacles such as small logs, mud puddles, ruts, and hills. No great speed or racing experience is needed. You can treat the race like a leisurely trail ride if you wish.

How Good a Bike Do I Need?

Any reasonably good-running, well-maintained bike designed to ride off-road will do. This includes dual-purpose bikes. Most experienced riders have special competition enduro bikes, but don't worry, they all started on old worn-out bikes just like the one you're probably on. If possible, knobby tires and "bark buster" type hand protectors will make your first enduros more enjoyable.

Note: Some clubs require lights, spark arrestors, and license plates

How Far Do I Have To Drive?

Most enduros are 2-4 hours drive north of the Twin Cities metro area in central and eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

How Much Gear Do I Need, Bare Minimum?

All you need is: helmet, eye protection, sturdy boots, leather gloves.

How Much Gear Should I Have, Ideally?

In addition the the gear mentioned above, I would recommend: motorcycle boots, fannypack (if no bike mounted tool bag), comfortable motorcycle gloves, padded bicycle type shorts, motorcycle pants (with knee pads), and chest protection.

How much tools and spare parts do I need?

You need a gas can (full) to leave at camp. You should carry: a spark plug and wrench(if you ride a 2-stroke).

How Much Will it Cost?

If you are starting from scratch you will need an annual AMA membership ($20), an annual Dist 23 membership and entry fee (usually $30).

How Long Are The Races?

Local enduros usually range from 60-80 miles. Half of this is usually forest roads, one quarter is easy trails and one quarter is difficult and narrow trail.

Do I Need To Know All The Rules Of Enduro?

No, most of us learned as we went along. The clubs and other riders are prepared to help you along with any questions you may have.

How Do I Find Out When and Where the Enduro Is?

The AMA Magazine lists location and contacts for each event in the Sport section under District 23. Otherwise, Larson's Cycle in Cambridge MN has served the Minnesota Enduro riders for years and they can help you with directions, contacts and any special enduro equipment you may want.

How do I Find Out Which Races Are Best For First Timers?

The best way is to ask other riders. If you don't know any, call the club hosting the event and ask them, but be prepared to read between the lines since the person talking to you is probably an expert rider! The weather is the other good indicator. If it has rained heavily during the week before the event the enduro will probably be more difficult than a dry one.
