Cox Competition Driver Bio

2001 is Cox Competition's driver Jim Cox's rookie season at SCCA Performance Rally. The season started off with far better results than Jim dreamt possible with convincing wins in the Production class at his first two races (Sno and Drift Clubrallies in Atlanta MI 1/01).

In preparation for his Performance Rally debut, Jim drove a number of Autocross and Rallycross events during the summer of 2000. In his first season of Rallycross, and not competing in the full schedule, Jim was a very close 2nd place in the Open Stock class (21 entries) for the 2000 Land-O-Lakes Region Rallycross series. Jim won Open Stock class at the last two events.

Jim doesn't come to Performance Rally with much auto racing experiance, but he wasn't completly un-prepared. Jim has been racing motorcycles off-road for 14 years in events called Enduros and Hare Scrambles. Jim was the 1996 Hare Scrambles State Champion in the 200cc A Class. "I think dirt bike racing is nearly ideal training for Rally racing, you have to be smooth and fast at the same time on a bike. Also, crashing hurts!, so you learn to find your edge of control and not cross it very often. Bad driving habits are immediately punished by a bike; too much throttle, you fall down, too much brake, you fall down, too fast into the corner, you fall down, weight in the wrong place, you fall down... It seems that in a car you can develope bad habits because you may never figure out that you aren't going fast until someone beats you."

Jim lives in Corcoran MN with his wife and co-driver Kaari Cox. He is an engineer for a medical device company. In addition to auto racing, Jim still enjoys racing dirt bikes, snowmobiling, playing broomball year-round and riding his mountain bike.
