Jim & Kaari's Subaru Legacy Turbo Page

Jim autocrossing the Legacy

We own a 94 Subaru Legacy Sport Turbo and it's been a real struggle finding information about it, so I decided these great cars needed a web page, somebody had to do it!

It was time to replace my faithfull Mitsubihsi Eclipse GSX with a bigger car with fewer miles. I was looking for an affordable used awd sedan with a rally pedigree. I thought a Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 would be the only candidate. But with only 3000 built in the USA over a span of two years, they're had to find. After search in vein for a while I came upon a 94 Subaru Legacy Sport Turbo. Comfortable, AWD, proven rally record, low miles and the price was right. I bought it. The more I learn about it, the more I like it.

One of the first things I learned was that information and performance parts were very hard to find. Most Subaru dealers hadn't even heard of them! Then I found out why, because they are extremely rare. These cars were only made from 91-94 and check out these production numbers:

1991 - 58 5-speeds were sold, and 149 automatics were sold.

1992 - 6 5-speeds were sold, and 5 automatics were sold.

1993 - 25 5-speeds were sold, and 45 automatics were sold.

1994 - 170 5-speeds were sold, and 230 automatics were sold.

This is a total of 688 of these vehicles sold and only 259 5-speeds! Now subtract the usual road attrition and the 5-speeds have been lost to rally competetion, and there can't be more than 100-200 left in the country.
