AN OPEN LETTER TO BILL GATES
Dear Mr. Gates,
I think that you should use the maximum financial forces you can command to
manufacture as many computers, software and Internet connective hardware for
distribution, at no charge, throughout the world.
This distribution should focus on "rogue nations" and peoples who
harbor anti-American feelings with the only stipulation (unenforceable, of course)
that the recipients should make a www connection. They can choose to hit Osama's
website, the Taliban's or Saddam Hussein's, no matter.
The current situation has shown us that Teddy Roosevelt's "Big Stick"
is pretty useless in Afghanistan and for combating terrorism. To his credit,
George Bush realized this by saying that he wasn't going to send a 2 million
dollar missile into an empty tent to blow the ass off a camel.
I feel that the real "Big Stick" we have is information. Certainly
there will be some who will use these computers to communicate within terrorist
cells, plot, scheme etc. That is collateral damage which far outweighs the positive
effects of free communication with alienated, but reasonable, people.
Many thanks for your time in reading this,
John Fenn
P.S. I encourage all of you who feel as I do to forward this message to others
and, if you have the ability, to employ a more reliable way to get this letter
to Mr. Gates
