The Real Estate Deal -- Answer

Answer: You sit and stare at Steve's chicken scratching for a good, long while. Something doesn't seem quite right about this! You toss the calculator aside and take a closer look at the drawing Steve gave you. Let's see, Steve said that the property would have 20 miles of lakefront. That sounds too good to believe.

You take out a red marker and trace the 20 mile line on the bottom of Steve's drawing.

A closer look at Steve's drawing

That means that point A to point D is a distance of 20 miles. According to this drawing, I can walk from point A to point B and cover 5 miles. From point B to point C is another 10. Finally point C to point D would cover another 5 miles. That makes my total distance travelled along the A-B-C-D path equal to 20 miles!

Wait a minute! That is how long the "lakeshore" distance is at the bottom of the drawing was (point A to point D). Is that possible? It sure is... only if A-B-C-D essentially lays on top of the lakefront path. (A-D)

Basically Steve is trying to sell me a plot of land that is a line!!! How could he do that... The area of this figure is zero square miles. I think I'll give Steve a call back and tell him where he can put his real estate deal!
