(Answer) (Category) FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) General :
How can I install a Windows documentation package on a non-Windows machine?
If you have a copy of the Windows JBuilder 8 documentation kit, (jb8docs.zip) you *can* install this on a non-Windows machine using only a ZIP archive program. The reason this works is that the installer executable is actually a ZIP file in disguise, and so are JAR files. See the technical note below for more details on this if you are interested.

Here is the procedure for installing the documentation:

   1) Extract doc_install.exe from jb8docs.zip
   2) Rename doc_install.exe to doc_install.zip
   3) Extract installer.zip from doc_install.zip
   4) Extract doc_zg_ia_sf.jar from installer.zip
   5) Rename doc_zg_ia_sf.jar to doc_zg_ia_sf.zip
   6) Extract all .jar files from doc_zg_ia_sf.zip
      to the JBuilder /docs directory

Some ZIP programs will only open a file with a ".zip" extension. If this is not required by your ZIP program, you can skip the "rename" steps and open the ".exe" and ".jar" files directly with the ZIP program.

Technical note:
The "doc_install.exe" file *is* a Windows executable file, but it is also a ZIP file. The reason that the file can be both is that the Windows executable format is defined by data structures at the beginning of the file, whereas the ZIP file format is defined by data structures at the end of the file. This file has a Windows executable at the front end and a ZIP file at the back end.

Note that the archive files listed above contain path information, which you might have to specify to your zip program. Here are the steps again, including the paths:

1) From "jb8docs.zip", extract "jb8docs/doc_install.exe".
2) Rename "jb8docs/doc_install.exe" to "doc_install.zip".
3) From doc_install.zip, extract "InstallerData/installer.zip".
4) From "installer.zip", extract "$IA_METRO_DIR/deliver/doc_zg_ia_sf.jar".
5) Rename "doc_zg_ia_sf.jar" to "doc_zg_ia_sf.zip".
6) Extract all .jar files from doc_zg_ia_sf.zip to the JBuilder /docs directory.
