Video Cards/Drivers reported to have DirectX bugs
ATI Rage 128 Pro. Go to the ATI website and download the newest drivers for Windows 2000. This card's bugs can even manifest as a memory error in java.exe.

For Windows 98 and the Rage, Josh also wrote:

Install this video driver:

Install DirectX 8:

  http://www.microsoft.com/directx/

If this doesn't do it, disable DirectX.

ATI Radeon 32 DDR on a Windows 2000 Professional causes random crashes in JVM 1.3. This happens with the drivers that shipped with the card as well as the most recent versions (as of 1/22/01.)

The Matrox G400 causes problems for some users. See this Borland FAQ for additional information and possible work-arounds:
  http://community.borland.com/article/0,1410,26214,00.html

The Matrox G400 is a dual-head (two monitor) card and has problems displaying Java applications properly.

Chris Chrysostom reported the following bad combination:

  OS Version: Windows 2000
Video adapter: Diamond Multimedia Viper II Z200
  Video chipset: S3 Savage 2000
  Driver date: 4/19/2000
  Driver version: 5.12.1.0

Interestingly, this machine dual-boots Win98 and does just fine without the -D workaround under Win98.
